Innisfree turns 20!

Since the rise of kbeauty as a result of the worldwide spread of the kpop fever (you can thank BTS for that), there has been one cosmetic brand that has risen to lead this new craze, attaining in the process cult-like following of loyal beauty enthusiasts bound to put to shame most western brands.

I myself have been a fan too, with the Innisfree green tea serum being one of my all-time favorites.

Innisfree hydrating serum

Innisfree is a naturalism-oriented cosmetics brand created by Amore Pacific in 2000. The brand name derives from [Irish] poet W. B. Yeats‘ poem, ‘The Lake Isle of Innisfree‘.

According to Innisfree history, it’s founder Sunghwan Suh’s  mission began in his childhood when he spent countless hours watching his
mother artfully craft beauty treatments from the finest camellia oil.

His tireless search to continue this legacy eventually led him to Jeju Island.

While many believed it to be a barren land void
of nourishment, Mr. Suh saw Jeju Island’s potential
to be the perfect grounds for cultivating a green tea field.

His instincts were right, as Jeju’s natural elements—
the mineral-rich water, the volcanic ash soil, the ideal
precipitation levels and the moderate temperatures—all
worked in harmony to yield a superior green tea harvest

In 2000, Jeju Island and its unmatched green tea fields formed the foundation of Innisfree.

Innisfree history

From there, Innisfree went on to unlock the skincare benefits of over 15 ingredients responsibly sourced from the island using cutting-edge extraction methods
that preserve their purity and potency from plant to bottle.

Innisfree to this day continues to discover new ways to tap into the wonders of Jeju Island’s rare natural reserves to offer skincare solutions for every concern.

Kbeauty philosophy

The Korean approach to beauty is all about prevention.
Women from other parts of the world may not consider a full skin care routine until they notice a blemish or fine lines forming, whereas Korean women begin meticulously caring for their skin from a very young age before any damage has been done. They believe that if you need to address a problem, it’s too late and covering flaws with heavy makeup is not an option.

Innisfree beauty philosophy

They preserve and protect their skin’s pristine state to delay aging for as long as possible to achieve and maintain a truly healthy glow.

In this quest to maintain an authentically flawless complexion, Korean women go to great lengths to seek out the finest and safest ingredients, the most efficient delivery systems and the most effective layering techniques—sometimes involving more than 12 products!
—creating a skincare routine that sets the standard worldwide.

Today, as one of South Korea’s leading beauty brand clocks 20, a significant milestone, we wish them the best of luck and dedication to their craft!

3ce commercial fail🤦‍♀️

I’ve been following 3ce’s Instagram page for a while now, bought some of their cosmetics a little while back, while in most cases I’d rate their products a little bit above average to good, I still do pay attention to the brand as their packaging can be quite captivating, I mean who could resist a cute flashy looking product on a supermarket shelf?!

Today, however, the South Korean cosmetic brand released a new product, an oil cleanser, and then decided to share the good news with their 1.7 million Instagram followers.

The commercial looked pretty, pastel colors here and there, with a drop-dead gorgeous Korean model to showcase the product beautifully packed in a bottle.

Pretty girl waves the product around here and there to get our attention, pretty girl pumps a bit of the product in her hands, pretty girl rubs the product on her face, the only problem was, not a streak of makeup was wiped off!

If you are trying to sell a product that is supposedly supposed to help people wipe the dirt, oil, and makeup from their faces, don’t you think having a product showcased to be doing the very opposite is total marketing fail?

But who knows, maybe they’re just trying to follow in on Kylie Jenner’s footsteps, and create publicity by controversy or an obvious lack of attention to details.

On getting skinny legs and feminine calves; what I’ve learned

the legs are arguably one of the most important parts of the body, especially when it comes to living an active, productive life. Nevertheless, when it comes to physical attraction especially in females, after the face, legs come in second. This is why YouTube is plagued with an insurmountable number of videos dedicated to this one topic.

nevertheless, when it comes to slimming down the lower body, exercise only is not enough, especially when the legs are larger than “normal”, this could also not just be as a result of building excess muscles or just downright gaining weight from poor dietary choices, but rather an underlying medical condition. Depending on the severity of it, you may need to see a doctor.

Nevertheless, in today’s article, we would be looking at common causes of large calves and other possible causes for the appearance of the infamous cankles and what you could do about it at home.

from my own research, some of the causes of larger looking legs could include,

having more muscular-looking legs could be beautiful, but only when it is worn by the right body, and that is, a significantly taller person with long legs (take athletes for example), if that is not the case with you, it’ll only end up making your legs look shorter, and that is not aesthetically pleasing. (Well, that depends on your personal taste).

How to reduce calf muscles

Who shouldn’t be doing these leg workout if they want slender legs and rounder butt

nevertheless, based on the problems highlighted, this is what I have learned when it comes to creating the appearance of a slender looking legs which is thought to be more aesthetically pleasing by the vast majority of people.

How to reduce leg fat

What influences the size of your legs

Although there are numerous factors which potentially influence the appearance of your legs, genetics excluded, these factors could also play a significant role on their own, and these could include

Water retention (edema) and toxic build-ups (in lymph nodes)

according to medical news today,

Water, or fluid, retention occurs when there is a problem with one or more of the body’s mechanisms for maintaining fluid levels. The main symptoms are swelling and discomfort.

The circulatory system, the kidneys, the lymphatic system, hormonal factors, and other bodily systems all help maintain healthy fluid levels. If a problem arises with one or more of these systems, however, fluid retention — otherwise known as edema — can occur.

The human body uses a complex system to regulate its water levels. Hormonal factors, the cardiovascular system, the urinary system, the liver, and the kidneys all play a role. If there is a problem with any one of these parts, the body may not be able to expel fluid as it should. Edema could affect any area of the body.

How to reduce swelling in the legs

What causes edema?

Edema could be caused by various factors, some of which may include

  • capillary damage:

Capillaries are tiny blood vessels with a key role in managing fluid balance in the body. Some medications, such as those for high blood pressure, can cause damage to the capillaries.

Capillaries deliver fluid to surrounding tissues. This fluid, called interstitial fluid, supplies nutrients and oxygen to cells. After delivering the nutrients, the fluid returns to the capillaries.

  • congestive heart failure:

The pumping action of the heart helps maintain normal pressure within the blood vessels. If a person’s heart stops working effectively, their blood pressure will change. Fluid retention can arise from this.

There may be swelling in the legs, feet, and ankles, as well as fluid in the lungs, which can result in a long-term cough or breathing difficulties.

  • kidney issues:

The kidneys filter the blood and help maintain fluid levels in the body.

Waste, fluids, and other substances pass into tiny tubules in the kidneys, which act as a filter. The bloodstream reabsorbs anything the body can reuse and removes the waste in urine.

If the kidneys do not work properly, they cannot remove waste material, including fluids and sodium. The fluid will therefore stay in the body.

  • Pregnancy.

The lymphatic system

The lymphatic system carries lymph through the body. Lymph is a fluid that contains white blood cells. It helps the immune system defend the body against infection. As the lymphatic system delivers and reabsorbs lymphatic fluid, it also helps the body maintain fluid balance.

If a problem prevents the lymphatic system from working properly, fluid can start to build up around the tissues. This can cause swelling in various parts of the body, including the abdomen, ankles, legs, and feet. Various massage techniques have been created to manually help with the flow of the lymphatic system, consequently helping to reduce the size of your legs significantly, I’ll be sharing some of these in my upcoming posts.

Exercises to reduce leg fat

Cortisol and exercise

Cortisol is a hormone that belongs to a family of steroid hormones known as glucocorticoids. It’s secreted by the adrenal cortex, which is located in your adrenal glands that sit atop your kidneys. Cortisol is the main glucocorticoid in humans.

Glucocorticoids affect every cell in the body so needless to say, they’re pretty important.

Cortisol is often referred to as the ‘Stress Hormone’. Nevertheless, it is produced naturally throughout the day and is released in greater amounts as a response to stress be it when you’re working out, or when you haven’t slept in days because you are trying to meet a project deadline, or just grudgingly standing for hours on the queue.

The adrenal gland is where Cortisol is produced and released by the body in varying levels throughout the day. Cortisol levels are generally higher in the mornings and lower at night time as the amount of Cortisol released drops throughout the day, and that is, of course, only if your body doesn’t release more Cortisol at night as a reaction to chronic stress.

Exercising for an extended period of time, especially with weights without adequate breaks and stretches in between can cause you to gain explosive muscles. Of course, this could be a good thing if you are working on glutes, but not so much when the legs are the focal point. How to get Korean slim legs

What you can do about it

to keep this post brief, as people’s attention span keeps dropping at an alarming rate every year, subsequent posts will be created to elaborate on various possible solutions. Bear in mind that these tips are not meant to diagnose, treat, and cure any medical issues, please consult a certified doctor for that 😊. So with that out of the way, here are some bullet tips.

On exercise

  • Increase the time between each workout repetition and possibly shorten how many sets you do per training. If you want to work out for 30 minutes, break down the time.
  • Try training using your own bodyweight, then you can slowly creep up the weights.
  • Stretch, before a workout, and after most especially.
  • Try Pilates and Yoga, these are great for lengthening and toning up the legs without the risks of bulking. Ballet inspired workout is my current favorite!

On water retention and the lymphatic system

  • Massage Therapy, this is arguably a holy grail tip. I’ll sharing my knowledge in upcoming posts.
  • Try moving around a bit and resist the urge to be a damn couch potato! 🥔 you need to get your body’s blood and fuel moving. Get up and move around a bit after sitting or standing for too long.
  • Give the herbs some try, dandelion extracts have been known to be of great value.

On obesity and inactivity

Honestly, I’m kind of getting tired of this topic, at some point, it just seems like ranting, but since this trend does not show any sign of slowing down, this and also the fact that I am a pre-med with an interest in the field of endocrinology (go Hopkins! 🤘), I’ve got to suck it up. So here are some quick tips

  • Watch your damn diet and nutrition, calorie in, calorie out, does not work especially when you’re carb-loading!
  • don’t just focus on weight loss, larger legs (especially edema) is caused by malnutrition. And no, taking supplements is not enough, eat your damn veggies for Pete’s sake! 🍶🥦🥕🍅🍓
  • Watch the sodium, but watch the sugar even closer. 🧐
  • Move your butt, not just because it kills the calories, but because your poor heart and lymphatic system need it.

So that’s that about that, I hope this post was brief, but most especially, I hope you understood it. Let me know in the comments section below your questions and thoughts on this. 👌

Affluence starts with the Mani’s

There is an age-old belief that says that you can tell a man’s class or profession by merely looking at their hands.

Indeed for a woman, you could literally tell her level of self-attentiveness, value, and care by how well her hands look.

Anyone can slather on a good makeup and perfume, but it takes a truly elegant woman to pay attention to the littlest of details when it comes to their physical appearance.

If there is one thing the affluent society is known for, is it scrutinizing eyes, therefore, anything that hints at you not putting your best foot forward; a chipped nail polish, that little tear on your cloth, a poorly-tailored dress or suit, could drastically lower your value, putting a roof over how far you could go in life.

Luxury nail polish

This nevertheless, does not mean you should engage in an avant-garde display of wealth through clothing and material possession, for that will only flatter (sometimes) the people who are poor or nouveau rich. But never the people who are affluent, people who hold the power to advance your career. at best, you’d only end up stirring disgust, insecurities, and envy, all of which are counter productive for you. How to climb a social ladder: the rules

unlike men, women have a much “easier” ride into the affluent society, a well dressed and spoken woman with a beautiful face and shallow pockets can travel much faster than the average man or person.

other than the face and legs, what other body parts do you think gets the most attention and grace?

A beautiful, delicate, well-kept hands. Nothing screams “money bag” and luxury louder than that!

A beautiful hand right from the beginning of organized society has been something most sought after, it is a sign we unconsciously ascribe to nobility, even to our modern-day, it is a trend that shows no sign of slowing down soon.

Not too long ago, I shared a post on how to get baby hands, HOW TO MAKE BEAUTIFUL BABY HANDS today we are going to talk get a flawless manicure to go with it by picking the right nail polish shade. The kind that screams class, femininity, and elegance!

Picking the right nail polish

Pretty much all nail polish colors are beautiful, the only question, who’s wearing it?

When it comes to colors, factors such as skin tone, skin undertone, and the general skin contrast would always play major roles in what colors truly brings out the beauty of your hands.

Nude nail polish

Although generally, I do love nude and pastel colors as it is easy for it to blend into any outfit or style I chose to wear any day, having other colors on too from time to time doesn’t hurt, the general rule of thumb is to keep it elegant and natural, no matter what color you chose to wear

Elegant nail polish

Colour charts for dummies

skin undertones, are typically classified into warm and cold, which are further broken down into seasons; autumn, winter, spring, and summer. With spring and autumn falling under warm, while summer and winter, are classified cold.

Skin undertone coding for nail polish

Knowing what skin undertone you fall under is the basics to knowing what color that doesn’t just suit you, but also enhances your features while remaining natural.

In my case, I am a warm autumn.

these charts are also applicable, though with slight modifications to people of darker skin tone.

Tips to finding your undertone

Do you have Green or blue veins? This is one of the most common ways of determining your skin undertone, check your wrist, if you can see green veins, then you are warm-toned like me. If your veins are blue, then obviously, you are cold toned. Of cause, there are also those who have both green and blue colored veins.

Skin undertone test

The gold/silver test stand in front of a neutral background, white perhaps, and hold gold or silver cloth or jewelry, whichever one you like. Place either item alongside your face and look at a mirror, if your face looks dull against; A. Gold, then you are cold toned, B. Silver, then you are warm-toned. Obviously, if either color brightens up your face, giving you a glow in the process, then you know you are the tone such item represents.

The shade of your hair and eye color also gives out a little bit of information on what skin undertone you have.

Picking a nail polish

People with cold summer undertones are the queens of pastel colors!

everything on the light and cool side looks great on them.

there is always a general rule of thumb when it comes to picking colors for every four seasons and categories especially when the goal is to have an elegant polished finish.

granted, it may be tempting to purchase and use a color you like even though it might not be the best shade on you, I, for example, love cool pastel colors, but as warm autumn, that would only make my hands look dull and shaggy, with the color overpowering my hands.

Luxury manicure

Therefore, as annoying as it may be at times, we just have to find what works and stick to it.

Extra notes

When trying to get a clean manicure work done, most people would have on to a spa, which is recommended, I know I can’t pull the look that I want on my own, don’t have the skills for that. But due to the pandemic, most businesses are out of work for safety reasons. You could nevertheless, use this as an opportunity to learn the art of self-pampering so you do not have to meet a professional every single time you need a job done. That’s why DIY manicure kits exist. Just know that no matter how beautiful and proud you are of the work you have done, do not keep nail polish on for more than a week. I learned that the hard way as the nail polish ended up staining my nails.

Take the polish out every week if you applied them directly to your nails every week even if they are perfectly fine and reapply again, even if it’s the same color.

No one wants to see a zit, so this is how you get rid of them

I’ve been having all sorts of acne drama lately, I used to be one of the lucky teenagers when It came to escaping social death by acne, but as I ease into my twenties, those little demons finally realized that they are yet to pay me a little visit! I guess the only “bright side” about this is that I am currently under quarantine. 😐

Nevertheless, I started doing research about acne and other related topics and I made some really interesting discoveries, through that, I was able to minimize drastically the number of acne spread across my face.

In today’s post, I will be exploring 3 very common types of acne, and how to go about laying death to them with minimal battle scars!

Some personal note: whether the information shared here today will be of any use to you depends on the degree of severity of acne you currently have, especially when comes it comes to using OTC products or the classic DIY approach. You may need to see a dermatologist.

3 most common types of acne

Having acne is no fun, regardless of what kind of acne it is. But knowing what type of pimples you are dealing with is one of the first steps you can take in addressing the problem and working with your dermatologist to figure out how best to treat it. You can start by reading over the three most common kinds of acne and see if what you are dealing with fits into any of these categories.

Although there are numerous types of acne out there, these are the three most common type of acne afflicting the average person

  • Hormonal acne
  • Cystic
  • Whitehead or blackhead

Hormonal acne

This type of acne is fairly easy to recognize as it usually follows a distinctive pattern that corresponds with your hormonal cycles. In females, it often gets worse right before or after your monthly period, when your hormones are fluctuating. It may also flare up right around the time that you ovulate each month. Hormonal acne is also common in males, and may occur at any age. This type of acne is often found around the mouth area, including the chin, jaw and lower cheeks.

Nevertheless, your monthly cycles aren’t the only things capable of influencing your hormonal balance. The kind of foods you chose to consume, the level of toxic chemicals present in our everyday products, as well as your general stress level, play a major role.

Not too long ago, the facial mapping system became popular as a means of deciphering what acne in certain areas of the face meant as a way of predicting the state of various aspects of our body. The philosophy behind this is that every part of our body is connected and the state of one area could directly influence the state of another.

Cystic acne

When bacterial infections clog a pore of your skin, this reaction can trigger cystic acne, which often feels like it is deeply rooted far beneath the surface of your skin. Cystic acne may take longer to develop and longer to go away once a pimple has risen to the surface and created a head. This type of acne is often linked to oily skin.

Cystic acne is the most serious type of acne. It develops when cysts form deep underneath your skin. This can result from a combination of bacteria, oil, and dry skin cells that get trapped in your pores.

Although anyone can develop acne, cystic acne tends to occur in people with oily skin. It’s also more common in teens, women, and older adults with hormonal imbalances.

Usually, cystic acne can improve with age. However, the stubborn and painful bumps won’t go away on their own. If you suspect you have cystic acne, your dermatologist is your best line of defense. They can prescribe the medication necessary to help clear your skin.

Whiteheads or blackheads

These two types of acne are very common and may occur anywhere on the face or body. Both types are the result of oil clogging up pores, which results in bacterial infections and then creates pimples, pustules or nodules. While whiteheads are the product of white blood cells rising to the surface to combat infection, blackheads may be due to oxygen rising to the surface of the skin.

There are some common misconceptions about whiteheads. Understanding what can and can’t cause acne is important for getting rid of whiteheads. The following factors have little to no effect on acne:

  • Excessive washing and scrubbing doesn’t prevent whiteheads.
  • Dirt doesn’t cause acne.
  • Washing your face too hard can irritate the skin and worsen existing acne.
  • Greasy foods don’t cause acne.

How to treat

Different acne types require a treatment approach especially when the end goal is to not only cure and stop further recurrence, but to also prevent scaring.

Hormonal acne treatment

Skincare products can be used to treat mild to moderate cases of hormonal acne. Some natural ingredients that you should consider having in the products you buy should include

Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil works by decreasing inflammation that can contribute to acne. One study found that 5 percent of topical tea tree oil relieved symptoms in participants with mild to moderate acne.

Tea tree oil is available in many of skin care products, such as cleansers and toners. You can also use tea tree essential oil as a spot treatment.

You should always dilute tea tree essential oil with a carrier oil before use. Popular carrier oils include coconut, jojoba, and olive. The general rule is to add about 12 drops of carrier oil to every one to two drops of essential oil.

It’s also important to do a skin patch test before using diluted tea tree essential oil. To do this, apply the diluted oil to the inside of your forearm. If you don’t experience any irritation or inflammation within 24 hours, it should be safe to apply elsewhere.

Alpha hydroxy acid

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are plant acids derived mostly from citrus fruits. AHAs can help remove excess dead skin cells clogging pores. As a bonus, AHAs can help minimize the appearance of acne scars.

AHA can be found in many OTC masks and creams. As with retinoids, AHAs can increase your skin’s sun sensitivity. You should always wear sunscreen when using products with AHA.

Green tea

Green tea is known for decreasing inflammation in the body. For a more holistic approach, consider drinking a few cups per day besides practicing your topical skin care regimen. Lotions and gels containing at least 2 percent green tea extract may be beneficial.

Hormonal acne dietary tips

As your skin is a direct reflection of the state of your internal being, Research has shown that changing certain dietary habits can significantly reduce acne symptoms.

The following are the most evidence-based ways to control acne through your diet.

  • Watch the amount of sugar in your diet, this transcends added sugar, therefore this includes high glycemic index foods, these include white bread, ice cream, pasta, etc.
  • try cutting out dairy and whey protein
  • Eat mostly whole and nutrient-dense foods. One rule of thumb is to ” eat the rainbow”.

Treatment for cystic acne

  • Whatever you do, do not try to pop it, not only because it is impossible, but because you’d only end up making the matter worse!
  • when you first notice the presence of cystic acne, try to apply an ice pack to it as it helps constrict the small blood vessels feeding the cyst, thereby drastically reducing the size and redness of it.
  • The best way to treat acne is to use different ingredients that work differently and complement each other, That’s why I typically advise people to use both salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide.
  • To maximize the efficacy of both of these active ingredients in your skin-care routine, a salicylic acid cleanser, followed by an oil-free moisturizer, topped off with a benzoyl peroxide spot treatment should be ideal.
  • Applying an over-the-counter, 1 percent hydrocortisone cream, which contains a low dose of topical steroids, can help reduce redness and calm inflammation.
  • When your cystic acne persists despite your very best efforts, try using makeup with a slight green tint to help mask redness and blend your pimple into your natural skin tone.

Whitehead or blackhead acne treatment

A person affected by whiteheads can try boiling some water, putting it in a bowl, and then holding the affected area of their body over the bowl.

In the case of the head and neck area, they can create a steam tent by putting a towel over their head, to concentrate the steam onto their upper body. Some people find using apple cider vinegar useful, but I do not recommend it, rather you can try applying other natural ingredients listed below either in its concentrated form or contained in other skincare products.

  • Witch hazel
  • salicylic acid
  • alpha hydroxy acid
  • Tea tree oil
  • A mild retinoid cream
  • honey
Tips for preventing and treating whiteheads

Tips for preventing and treating whiteheads include:

  • trying not to touch the area
  • avoiding cosmetic, laundry, and cleaning products with irritants, such as fragrances or dyes
  • using only non-comedogenic (not pore-clogging), oil-free cosmetics and skin products
  • not squeezing, picking, or trying to pop whiteheads
  • avoiding places with high air pollution or increasing skin hygiene if exposed to heavy air pollution
  • washing skin thoroughly when in humid areas
  • avoiding tight-fitting clothes, uniforms, or sports equipment
  • trying not to scrub or aggressively cleanse the skin
  • avoiding sunburn
  • washing the face before bed and remove any makeup
  • avoiding the use of hair products on the skin
  • showering or bathing regularly
  • keeping long hair pulled back from the skin
  • Not obsessing over it
